Customer Rating: Summary: too much money for too little Comment: Sadly I have to say that this pen is overrated. I have a number of moderately priced pens ($50-$150) that are better constructed and feel better in the hand. Despite claims of "precious resin" the reality is that the pen is a black plastic pen with some gold plated trim. I don't see it being any more durable then any other pen. In fact, I would say that it is less durable than many of the moderately priced ones that I use. Cross makes great pens as does Waterman at a much lower price that write as well, if not better. When it comes to the Mont Blanc I think they have developed an image and that is what they are selling. $100 for image sounds about right, $300 makes me regret my purchase. I wish I could say something more positive, but this is the way I honestly feel.
Customer Rating: Summary: At least it works! Overrated and overpriced. Comment: I have a hard time believing most of these reviews are honest and serious. This pen doesn't write any better than the other over $5 ballpoints I've used. The long, flowery descriptions of how it writes and how important it will make you feel when you write a check have come out of the marketing brochures. Unfortunately, the pen writes like most "good" ballpoints- that is, those which cost more than $5. Yes, it performs better than a free Bic stolen from a doctor's office, but doesn't touch the performance of something like the Fisher Space Pen. I ended up throwing away the skippy MB refills and using a Fisher Space Pen refill. This worked fine until the plastic (yes, plastic- not "precious resin") cracked. To their credit, MB did repair it, but at some expense.
When it was out for repair, I started using the Fisher Space Pen refills in another pen, a much cheaper pen. Needless to say, a Mont Blanc refill feels *exactly the same* whether I'm using it in the Classique or in a $10 pen- same goes for the Space Pen refill. The MB didn't magically make it write any better than the refill would manage on its own. Judging by many of the angry reviews, some people were suckered into thinking that would.
Bottom line? Dollar for dollar, this is one of the worst values in pen history. It doesn't feel or write 10 times as well as a $10 pen, let alone 10 times as well as a $30 pen.
My recommendation:
Get It if:
- you want a bit of pocket jewlery to impress a lawyer or colleague who is clueless about fine pens, get this pen.
- you want a pen that writes as well as a Parker Jotter ($5), feels good in the hand, and allows you to waste an extra $300
Skip It if:
- if you want a good value on a well-built, well-writing fine pen
- you want a best-in-class pen that will beat out other options that cost the same or less
- you want a pen to impress a real connoisseur of fine writing instruments; this is a mere Rolex knock-off to someone who really knows their luxury watches
Customer Rating: Summary: Unique gift. Comment: This is one of the most valuable things I ever bougth through Amazon. Service was excellent and prices very reasonable. I stongly recommend buying here!!!! Two thumbs up.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice, but... Comment: Having owned several Montblancs over the years (and still do have 3 of them, 2 BP's and a FP), I'd have to take the middle ground here. Yes, the Montblanc BP is a classy, quality pen for everyday carry. However, I'd also have to agree with at least one reviewer here that it certainly is overpriced these days. A fine writing pen, but no more so than many others priced much lower.
I also have to say that the prestige of carrying a Montblanc has been somewhat diminished by all the fakes, knock-offs and copies out there. It's sort of like wearing a Rolex. You know it's genuine, but when people are so used to seeing fakes that they have to ask if it's the real thing, it takes some of the fun out. So, I'd rather be wearing an Omega and carrying a Parker or Waterman most of the time.
Customer Rating: Summary: Classic Pen from the House of Montblanc Comment: This pen makes for a great gift item. It is very classy and I would not refrain from calling it the Rolls Royce of fine writing instruments.
I have owned a few of these beauties and decided to add another to my collection. This pen is just beautiful in looks in writing and is meant for the classy. Gifting this pen to someone reflects on the class of the gift giver. People in corporate circles make a statement when they carry this pen to the board room. This pen has great aspirational value. I have gifted this pen to a lot of family members who have graduated from school and also during Christmas time , anniversaries and as birthday gifts. It makes for a great gift. Enjoy your pen.
